Learn drum and dance from the experts! Sign up here for the workshops held at the Rhythms of Our Own festival. You can sign up for workshops at the door, however, to guarantee your spot, we recommend reserving your seat now as space is limited.

Please note: If you require a drum, we need to know in advance. So please contact us and we will try our best to arrange this. There will be a fee for drum rentals.

Payments taken through Paypal (no Paypal account required) or you can make a reservation by phone or email. For phone/email reservations, please contact Anne aipsdrums@shaw.ca.

If you are an AIPS Member, you get discounts on all workshops – you must provide your name and AIPS membership card at the door. If the workshop is sold out, please contact us to be put on a waiting list.

Masani – West African Dance

Masani St. Rose – A native Calgarian who immersed into dancing at the tender age of 3, specializing in West African and Caribbean dance. Upon the introduction to dance, Masani found passion for the West African culture and style. It was through training under Michèle Moss-Johnston at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, she was able to build her foundation. Still working very closely with Michèle Moss-Johnston and various other artists from Guinea, West Africa, she finds every opportunity to take master classes from artists from various regions of Africa including, Congo, Uganda, Ghana, Mali, Guinea and Zimbabwe. Throughout the years, Masani has worked with various studios and professional groups across Canada. It is her mission to keep the art and culture alive from soul to sole!

An ideal workshop for anyone wanting to learn African dance.

Kita No Taiko Japanese Drumming is well known to Edmonton audiences, and has been a regular performer at “Rhythms of Our Own.” This dynamic ensemble never fails to dazzle with their dramatic and athletic performance on the taiko drums and gorgeous costuming. Undoubtedly Kita No Taiko is the complete percussion package: technique, drama, movement and of course breath-taking drumming. This is the ideal workshop for the beginner drummer, youth and adult, who doesn’t mind working up a sweat. All participants will have to sign a waiver. Drums are provided.

Come and experience hand drumming as a FUN, primal, simple, and profoundly rewarding way to spark your JOY and intuitive creative self! This is a playshop, that is about re-discovering your INNATE musical self. This class is less about getting it “right”, and more about MUSICAL SPIRIT! Perculating your natural creativity, and building the confidence, to share it for the collective upliftment of the circle.

All Drums/Instruments Provided. No Musical Experience Necessary.

Marcus Fung is a student of Life, and a lover of the great Mystery. He continues to journey, deepening the joyous understanding that Music is Life and Life is Music. A Early Childhood Music and Movement Educator, he is also a Grant Macewan Music Graduate In Jazz Performance, and Composition. He is a trained and seasoned Drum Circle Facilitator under the Arthurian Guiding Principles. Although studied in various forms of traditional drum styles, Marcus prefers most, the form of intuitive, resonant, creative and expressive drumming. Marcus has presented, and shared in: classrooms, communities, churchs, camps, conferences, colleges, group-homes, offices, yoga studios, festivals, fundraisers and gatherings accross Alberta.

Tim Waterson – Drum Kit Introduction for Youth

Tim Waterson, also known as “The DrumCan Man” to Fringe audiences, is one of Edmonton’s most dynamic and versatile performers. During his 20+ year career, Tim has established himself as a major force in the drumming community through performances, workshops, recordings and as an instructor. In addition to several music recordings, he has also produced instructional DVDs on the art of drumming. He is particularly noted for being one of the world’s fastest drummers; his lightening fast technique leaves his audiences breathless.
Tim’s workshop is aimed for the young novice kit drummer, from ages 14 up. Practice pads and sticks will be provided.

Azure Music is the up and coming purveyor of music instruction, workshops and instruments in Sherwood Park. Luke Coffey is fast developing a reputation as one of Edmonton’s best facilitators, especially for young children. These workshops are family friendly, suitable for all levels and guaranteed to be fun.
